The BLM Carlsbad Field Office will transform Tomago Moon, a former ConocoPhillips well pad in Eddy County, NM, into a 10-site campground. The campground with have 5 pads for RVs and 5 pads for tents when finished. Funding, generously donated by ConocoPhillips, will add shade shelters, ADA-compliant picnic tables, grills, and fire rings. ConocoPhillips employees will help BLM install amenities and this site that sits between Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks and will offer affordable, designated, environmentally responsible camping.
Carlsbad Caverns received nearly 500,000 visitors in 2024; the surrounding BLM lands have only two nearby campgrounds that fill quickly. Tomago Moon provides a well-located, safe, low-cost basecamp roughly halfway between two iconic national parks. It reclaims an industrial well pad for public recreation, concentrates use on designated sites, and reduces impacts from informal camping. Benefits include expanded access for tent and RV campers of all ages, abilities (ADA features), and socio-economic backgrounds; physical and mental-health benefits of time outdoors; local economic activity; and a lasting public amenity for current visitors and future generations. Thousands of Eddy County visitors each year will benefit.
