Project Description

Adjacent to the historic Lobatos Bridge, this project’s primary purpose is on developing a nature-based classroom to interpret the rich cultural, historic, and natural heritage of the Rio Grande Natural Area (RGNA).  This project will also enhance public access and recreation opportunities.  It will benefit people of all ages, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds, especially the surrounding underserved communities. This project is consistent with the Biden-Harris Administration’s “America the Beautiful” Initiative and is in accordance with the goals and objectives outlined in the RGNA’s Management Plan.  All infrastructure will be compliant with the Architectural Barriers Act and Americans with Disabilities Act.

Why it Matters

This project satisfies the intent of the RGNA Act of 2006, which was established “to conserve, restore, and protect the natural, historical, cultural, scientific, scenic, wildlife, and recreational resources of the Natural Area.” This project will provide social, environmental, and economic benefits to visitors and residents of supporting communities in a part of Colorado that is chronically underserved and under-represented and has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.
