Project Description

Sand Gulch Campground is located within the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office, Shelf Road Recreation Area, and north of Canon City, CO. It is a popular recreation site known for its sport rock climbing. The campground has 16 campsites with a plan to add 10-15 additional sites.

Why it Matters

Shelf Road has been established as a rock climbing area since the early 1990’s. Since then, the BLM developed management plans to address impacts associated with the dramatic increase in rock climbing and camping. This included the need for day-use parking, two campgrounds, restrooms, and established access trails. These facilities were installed in 1995 and are in need of additional facilities to address current visitation. Sand Gulch Campground needs improvements to the existing campsites, an additional vault toilet, an expansion to day-use parking and 10-15 more campsites. Sand Gulch is an active grazing allotment so fencing will be added to keep cattle out of the developed campsites.
