We will replant saguaros & other native desert plants in the 2020 Bush Fire burn scar. The Bush Fire burned 193,455 acres of the Tonto National Forest, including over 80,000 saguaros. When we lose an adult saguaro, it is not something that will be replaced in our lifetime. This grant will fund an additional 5 weeks of replanting projects for our Dedicated Restoration Team & second volunteer replanting event.
The cacti & nursery plants for this project are free when our team digs them up by hand & transplants them from construction sites & private properties where they would otherwise be destroyed during construction. This saves hundreds of thousands of dollars & greatly increases our impact, but it requires our teams labor.
Replanting a burn scar improves the appearance, usability & safety of the area. Community members are more likely to recreate & enjoy these outdoor. Bringing native plant communities back to this watershed helps soil stabilization, reducing the effects of erosion caused by water & wind. Wildlife benefit from the replanting of their native habitat, providing a healthy ecosystem.
In addition to the Tonto National Forest, the primary beneficiary of this project is the outdoor community, AZ residents & out of state visitors to the area; our project enhances the quality of the outdoor experience for everyone. This project benefits the Military Veteran on our team. Addressing their need to serve, we help veterans redefine their purpose.
