Project Description

This project will enhance recreational opportunities in the Jefferson Ridge Recreation Area and provide a safe area for our visitors to experience outdoor recreation at the most highly visited Recreation Area within the Millwood Tri-Lakes Project. This project is to help complete construction of a pedestrian hiking trail at the Jefferson Ridge Recreation Area at Dierks Lake, located in Dierks Arkansas. Dierks Lake is looking to add a 3.1 mile (5km) pedestrian trail to its most popular camping and recreation area with trail heads located at several popular destinations to provide safe access throughout the campground and day use areas.

Why it Matters

Jefferson Ridge is a popular recreation area that serves an average of over 80,000 people annually. Jefferson Ridge offers recreation activities such as; camping, swimming, fishing, and boating, as well as provide an opportunity to observe the abundant wildlife and scenic beauty of the area. There is only one main access road throughout the recreation area that is shared by vehicles, often pulling large campers, as well as pedestrians (bicyclist, and foot traffic). This trail system will provide a safe area for users to access various points of the campground without impeding traffic. Visitation rates are very high throughout the summer months and this trail system will allow pedestrians to access scenic areas of the lake with safe passage.
