The Great Outdoors Fund and Volkswagen Group of America Unveil Dual-Purpose Court in Reston, VA

Court Diversifies Recreation Opportunities in the Community

Reston, Virginia– October 9, 2024 –  The Great Outdoors Fund (TGOF), along with partners Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) and the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), unveiled a new dual-purpose basketball and futsal court at Stratton Woods Park in Reston, Virginia. Representatives from the U.S. Soccer Federation also joined the partners to celebrate the opening and help kids from the area break in the new court with a futsal clinic.

“This project is near and dear to my heart,” said TGOF’s Founder Lori McCullough. “As a soccer mom, I understand firsthand the value of playing sports. Combining sports with the outdoors reaps priceless rewards on society. Facilities like this are about more than just sports—they promote healthy lifestyles and support community growth.”

This newly completed court is the first partnership project between TGOF and Volkswagen. It addresses a growing need in Reston, home of Volkswagen Group of America’s North American Headquarters.

Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of VWGoA, kicked off the unveiling ceremony by highlighting the importance of expanding access to outdoor recreation and sport.  “Soccer is a deep passion of mine. In fact, it was soccer that gave me the opportunity to move to the States while in college,” said Di Si.

“This futsal court is more than just a place to play. It’s a symbol of Volkswagen’s dedication to supporting healthy lifestyles, promoting inclusivity, and strengthening the bonds within our community. It also complements a variety of soccer programs Volkswagen supports nationally, including our presenting partnership with the U.S. Soccer Federation.”

“Stratton Woods Park is a special place as it serves an opportunity area in Fairfax County and its diversity of activity represents the kinds of complete park experiences that the Park Authority seeks to create,” said Park Authority Executive Director Jai Cole. “This is a shining example of an effective public-private partnership to deliver an outstanding amenity intentionally placed in a community that is hungry for it, and that makes today extra special.”

Players from the U.S. Men’s Futsal National Team joined the event, participating in a futsal clinic for local children. “So many great players, from Lionel Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, started by playing futsal,” added McCullough. “We are excited to help provide the same opportunity for future soccer stars here in Reston.”

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors expressed appreciation for the group’s efforts and said, “I am deeply thankful to Volkswagen and The Great Outdoors Fund for their commitment to our community. Together, we have created something that will benefit Reston for years to come.”

Virginia’s Deputy Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources, Jennifer Walle, was also on hand and congratulated the entities for their work on the project and noted its importance for the advancement of community inclusion.

This project is part of TGOF’s commitment to expanding equitable access to outdoor spaces and enhancing recreational opportunities through public-private partnerships, ensuring that people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can experience and enjoy nature.
